Underneath each armchair, a small label with an UNESCO serial number is attached. In total, only 800 of this model were produced exclusively for the project, furnishing the main conference room and certain work areas in the building. The seat is upholstered in the original fabric embodying a checkered pattern of black and white small squares. The back has an open structure and runs smoothly into the armrests, creating nice comfort for the arms. This model features a sled base based on a trapezoidal shape, and, therefore, differs from his well-known ‘Conference’ chair introduced in 1946. This set of chairs were part of the auditorium. The Advisory Committee of Architects chaired by Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier, to name a few, were involved in the development of the architectural process. This iconic building was completed on 3 November 1958 by a team of three leading architects of that time: Bernard Zehrfuss, Marcel Breuer, and Pier Luigi Nervi. This large set of armchairs was commissioned by the UNESCO Headquarters located in Paris. His other works include Dulles Airport, Kresge Auditorium (Cambridge, Massachusetts), and TWA (New York City).Eero Saarinen for Knoll International, set of ‘Conference’ armchairs, fabric, chromed metal, France, Paris, designed in 1957 The observation deck at the top, accessed by a passenger train which climbs the wall of the arch, provides panoramic views to the east and west.įinnish-American architect Eero Saarinen originally studied sculpture, and this influence is apparent in much of his architecture. In order to withstand strong winds and earthquakes, the top of the arch was designed to sway up to 18 inches. The concrete foundation reaches 60 feet into the ground, greatly contributing to the arch's stability. It spans 630 feet at ground level from outer edge to outer edge and is 630 feet high, making it the tallest man-made monument in the US. The stainless steel-plated arch is in the shape of an inverted, weighted catenary curve.
